Let's Get Building!

Building homes is the mission of Habitat for Humanity, and our chapter takes great pride in making sure that everyone who wants to build can build. Currently we are awaiting the groundbreaking of our chapter’s 13th sponsored home. Working to help build homes in Athens Area (Clarke, Oglethorpe, and Oconee counties) is gratifying and a great experience. I have been involved with building homes in Athens ever since I started college. It is incredibly rewarding to work on a house and see it go from cinderblocks to walls to siding to a finished home. Hearing the homeowners’ stories really shows us how hard people work and how much a home that is yours means.

Athens Area welcomes UGA students with open arms, whether it is during the week or on a Saturday build. However, we always need to remember that homes are built with hard work. That includes fundraising, spreading the word about the work Habitat does, and encouraging our friends to become a part of our chapter. Come to a meeting and help get involved with all that UGA Habitat does!

UGA Habitat for Humanity depends on fundraising throughout the year in order to continue our efforts of providing sustainable housing for the Athens community. I didn’t realize until last semester how much effort has to be put into fundraising in order to get results. I also didn’t realize that working with the fundraising side of an organization can be the most rewarding. I realized all these things when I planned UGA Habitat for Humanity’s annual Gift Wrap Across Georgia fundraiser. This fundraiser takes place the week before Christmas and I worked last semester to set up volunteer times at 19 different stores. In the week before Christmas, volunteers raised $11,200 for UGA Habitat for Humanity. 10% of these funds will go to our affiliates for allowing to us to fundraise in their areas and the rest of the money will be put towards UGA Habitat for Humanity’s next house. The Gift Wrap fundraiser is one of the biggest events that UGA Habitat for Humanity has all year long and I am honored to say that I coordinated a fundraiser that directly impacts the Athens community. I hope that more people will realize how far reaching our fundraising efforts are and that UGA Habitat for Humanity’s work is making a difference.
