Orientation Fairs

Hey guys,

My name is Brooke Skelley, and I am one of the co-presidents for UGA Habitat. This morning was another morning spent at orientation fairs. You would think I would be better about being on time, but I have walked in at 9:14 so many times, including today! It is a lot of fun meeting the new students, but I can tell that orientation is overwhelming for a lot of them. I think I was one of those freshmen who kind of walked stealthily in the middle of aisles as to avoid signing up for countless listervs and receiving tons of flyers. I think my year it was in one of the lobbies of the SLC. How the times have changed!

There is nothing quite like being a senior on a bus with just a freshman and his/her parent. I love answering questions about bus routes and giving tips like “Use two cups in the dining hall,” and assuring them they can explore ratemyprofessors.com and change their schedules as much as possible once they’re home. I don’t think I would want to relive freshman year again, but it is fun meeting new students.

Talking about all the events we have coming up is a little overwhelming – with Building and Homecoming and Trick or Trot, it seems like there will surely be a lot to do, but I’m excited. I’m making the general schedule now for the semester, and I can’t wait to put it online. Mark your calendars for the first meeting, August 24th in MLC 150 at 7 pm!!

Fundraising!

Hey guys! My name is Tracy Phan. I am a freshman, and I am the new Major Fundrasing Chair. Basically, my job is to run Gift Wrap Across Georgia for Habitat for Humanity. This is our largest fundrasier. Last year, volunteers raised $11,200 in just the week and a half before Christmas! There is so much that can be gained from this just one event, and after raising this money, it goes to co-sponsoring another house. That, I feel, is the best thing about Habitat. Unlike the other service clubs out there, you don't just raise money, but you take an active part in raising it, AND you can see where it goes; there are so many people that do not have a warm bed to sleep and a safe roof to shelter them. We may complain about our dorm situations, but let's face it... There are lots of people with much worse housing situations, but we can do something about it!

Whether it is taking part in a build, wrapping for a couple of hours, or coming out to our percentage nights, I encourage everyone to get involved. There are many upcoming events and opportunites to do so. Check the calendar and save the dates!

Campus Outreach and Ambassadors

The position of Campus Outreach within the Habitat Chapter of the University of Georgia becomes the voice of the active student body of both Habitat members at UGA and the University itself. CO is in charge of being liaison between the student body and the rest of the Board of Directors. CO does this by interviewing active members to be selected as Ambassadors: more personal liaisons between the Board and active members that also act as natural leaders within Habitat and the University in general. CO is in charge of these ambassadors and uses them to help establish and lead the active body. CO is responsible for getting the organizations at UGA to participate with Habitat in various activities. These organizations range from large scale operations with the Greek Community to smaller, but just as important events with smaller clubs. CO is the liaison between Habitat and Volunteer UGA.

Ray Barrett

Ambassadors:

Laura Collins
Marissa Commissiong
Mary Rose Darr
Ashley Etchinson
Aja Griffin
Jayda Hazell
Katie Hemphill
Marianne Ligon
Gracie Milford
Charles Pham
Jessica Spruill
Jade Thomas
Stephanie Villarreal
Brian Williams
Natalie Woodall

--Ray Barrett, VP of Campus Outreach

Let's Get Building!

Building homes is the mission of Habitat for Humanity, and our chapter takes great pride in making sure that everyone who wants to build can build. Currently we are awaiting the groundbreaking of our chapter’s 13th sponsored home. Working to help build homes in Athens Area (Clarke, Oglethorpe, and Oconee counties) is gratifying and a great experience. I have been involved with building homes in Athens ever since I started college. It is incredibly rewarding to work on a house and see it go from cinderblocks to walls to siding to a finished home. Hearing the homeowners’ stories really shows us how hard people work and how much a home that is yours means.

Athens Area welcomes UGA students with open arms, whether it is during the week or on a Saturday build. However, we always need to remember that homes are built with hard work. That includes fundraising, spreading the word about the work Habitat does, and encouraging our friends to become a part of our chapter. Come to a meeting and help get involved with all that UGA Habitat does!

-Brock Perry
Projects Chair 2011

Fundraising

UGA Habitat for Humanity depends on fundraising throughout the year in order to continue our efforts of providing sustainable housing for the Athens community. I didn’t realize until last semester how much effort has to be put into fundraising in order to get results. I also didn’t realize that working with the fundraising side of an organization can be the most rewarding. I realized all these things when I planned UGA Habitat for Humanity’s annual Gift Wrap Across Georgia fundraiser. This fundraiser takes place the week before Christmas and I worked last semester to set up volunteer times at 19 different stores. In the week before Christmas, volunteers raised $11,200 for UGA Habitat for Humanity. 10% of these funds will go to our affiliates for allowing to us to fundraise in their areas and the rest of the money will be put towards UGA Habitat for Humanity’s next house. The Gift Wrap fundraiser is one of the biggest events that UGA Habitat for Humanity has all year long and I am honored to say that I coordinated a fundraiser that directly impacts the Athens community. I hope that more people will realize how far reaching our fundraising efforts are and that UGA Habitat for Humanity’s work is making a difference.

Elizabeth Dangler, Major Fundraising Chair 2010 VP of Finance 2011

Turkey Trot!

Dear UGA Habitat Followers,

This Sunday, November 14th, is UGA Habitat's 11th Annual Turkey Trot 5K Run/Walk. In the last week we have been working hard to finish up recruiting runners, sponsors, and volunteers. At the general body meeting this Wednesday, we will be giving away prizes to the members who bring in the most registration forms!! So recruit your friends, recruit your family, your coworkers, your boss, your professor, whoever! Remember: it's for Habitat, and walkers are welcome, so no pressure to run the whole way. Long sleeve T-shirts are provided with registration, AND race day registration is welcome. Help us fight substandard housing in Athens, and shed some pre-Turkey Day pounds along the way. Registration begins at 9, and the race at 10. We can't wait to see everyone on Sunday morning!!!

Sincerely,
Turkey Trot Committee

Idaho State tailgate

Hello Habitaters,

This weekend is the Idaho State football game, and the recycling coordinators are putting on a massive tailgate. Everybody on the board has signed up for a dish and/or drinks to share with everyone. Matt and Andrew will be setting up bright and early at 8am on Myers Quad and we will have an extensive spread of food, drinks, and the usual tailgate fun. But, we need as much help as possible. We need people to bring canned drinks, cookies, and the other tailgate favorites. We also really need some sort of music player (an iHome would be awesome.) Please, please, please email Matt or Andrew if you can help.

At the tailgate we will have a corn-hole tournament, a donation box, and a ton of recycling bins. The person who gathers the most cans from surrounding tailgates will win a Chick-fil-a gift card for a modest amount. This tailgate is geared towards promoting Habitat and how the recycling program helps to raise money for habitat homes. We hope to see you there and most importantly....GOOOO DAWGS!!!!!

The Recycling Coordinators,

Andrew and Matt

suddretha@gmail.com (706)-247-0142~ Andrew
mdubose@uga.edu (478)-361-2680~ Matt

Homecoming success

Hey UGA Habitat followers,

My name is Travis Howell, and I'm the current Vp of Campus Outreach. So I want to start of by saying thanks to everyone who made Homecoming week such a big success with the banner painting competition, street painting, and float building. The homecoming parade was amazing and Habitat 's float will always be number one in my eyes.

With the adrenalin of the Homecoming week still in our brain it is now time to move on to some of our exciting events like the Taste for Charity event with Alpha Kappa Psi, Idaho state tailgate, Turkey Trot, Pancake supper, and Gift wrapping. All these events need everyone's help to make them a huge success. I hope to see everyone out there and remember we are working to build a stronger community one house at a time.

Greetings Habitaters!!

On behalf of everyone on the exec board, I would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who showed up for our percentage night last Thursday at Your Pie!! It was a big success and we generated $110 that will go toward future Habitat homes and advocacy events in Athens.

Our next general meeting will be this Wednesday, September 29, at 7:30 pm in SLC 148, and we look forward to having another tremendous turnout. At our past two consecutive meetings we have exceeded over 100 attendees! These numbers are wonderful, and will go a long way toward helping us achieve our fundraising, advocacy, and building goals this semester. Those of you who have attended one of our meetings before know that after we go over general Habitat announcements as a group, we break into committees where we can get down to planning the details of our upcoming events. These committees are also designed to help members work in smaller groups where they can get to know other Habitat members and exchange ideas with board members about Habitat events. Your feedback is always welcome, and we, the board, want to make a big effort to get to know you and make you feel like a meaningful part of our organization!

So this Wednesday, take some time to think about which of our committees you would be interested in joining. Gift Wrap Across Georgia, our annual Turkey Trot 5K, Slam the Door on Poverty (our on campus build), Recycling Tailgate (Nov. 6), and Homecoming our are main committees this semester. However, there are many ways to participate in Habitat. If you have other ideas about what you would like to do in Habitat, please let us know and we will help you find something that you enjoy doing.

Also, many of our committee leaders are planning on meeting with their groups outside of our general Wednesday night meetings, so be sure to sign up for a committee listserv so you can stay informed. We look forward to seeing you all this Wednesday! Happy Habitating!!
